At Thornhill Primary, we follow the White Rose maths scheme, with deepening understanding used to extend fluency, reasoning and problem solving.
When teaching mathematics at Thornhill, we provide a curriculum which caters for the needs of all individuals and sets them up with the necessary skills and knowledge for them to become successful in their future adventures. We aim to prepare them for a successful working life. We incorporate sustained levels of challenge through varied and high quality activities with a focus on fluency, reasoning and problem solving.

Pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 (some children in Year 4)use Column Addition as their formal written calculation method.
Pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 use Column Subtraction as their formal written method - with exchanging and without exchanging.
Pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 use Short Multiplication as their formal written method for multiplying a number by a 1 digit number.
Pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 use Long Multiplication as their formal written method for multiplying a number by a 2 digit number.
Pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 use Short Division as their formal written method for dividing a number by a 1 digit number.
Pupils in Year 6 use Long Division as their formal written method for dividing a number by a 2 digit number.
